When Chevrolet debuted the Corvette in 1953, it was quite different than its current reputation as an American muscle sports car that everyone knows it as today. See the earliest Corvettes, sported 6 cylinder engines and automatic transmissions, and while they were sort of sporty it wasn’t until the introduction of the V8 into the Corvette 1955 that American consumers began thinking of the Corvette as a performance-oriented sports car. As the years progressed, Chevy introduced more performance options such as a 4 speed manual transmission and positraction rear end, as well as racing options such as big brakes and a big tank.
