Ten thousand dollars is a serious budget for a used motorcycle. You can get a genuinely excellent bike — not a compromise, not a first bike you’ll regret — if you know where to look and what to buy. The problem is the used moto market is full of overpriced project bikes, worn-out high-milers, and listings that haven’t been updated since 2022.
This list is based on 2026 market data: what these bikes are actually selling for right now, how they’re holding up, and which ones deliver the most motorcycle for under ten grand.

1. Suzuki SV650 — The Correct Answer

If you ask any experienced rider what the best used motorcycle value on the market is, the answer is almost always the SV650. It wins in almost every category: the parallel-twin V-twin sounds great, pulls hard enough to be fun without being terrifying, weighs 430 lbs, gets 50+ mpg, and costs almost nothing to maintain. Parts are everywhere. Mechanics know it cold.
The 2017+ generation got a new frame, updated suspension, and traction control on higher trims. A clean 2018–2020 SV650 with under 15,000 miles can be found for $5,500–$7,000. That’s a fully capable, fun, reliable motorcycle with years of riding left in it.
Who it’s for: Everyone. Seriously. New riders, commuters, track day riders, weekend canyon carvers. The SV does it all adequately and most things well.
Watch out for: Dropped fairings on the faired version (SV650S). Check for bent subframe and cracked plastics from tip-overs. Most cosmetic damage is cheap to fix but negotiate accordingly.
2. Honda CB500X — The Adult Choice
Market price range: $5,000–$9,000
Best years to buy: 2019–2022 (updated suspension and ergonomics)
The CB500X is what you buy when you want a motorcycle that will start every time, never leave you stranded, and still be fun to ride three years in. Honda’s 471cc parallel twin is not exciting. It is, however, bulletproof. The CB500X has also become a legitimate budget adventure bike — tall seat, upright ergonomics, enough ground clearance for light dirt.
The 2019+ refresh added USD forks and a larger 17.7L tank, making it noticeably better than the earlier generation. A clean 2019–2022 CB500X sits between $6,500–$8,500 on the current market. Worth every dollar for the reliability alone.
Who it’s for: New and intermediate riders, commuters, touring riders on a budget, anyone who rides in all weather.
3. Yamaha MT-07 — Best Naked Under Ten Grand
Market price range: $6,000–$9,500 (2015–2019 models)
Best years to buy: 2016–2018
The MT-07’s 689cc crossplane-concept parallel twin is one of the best-sounding, best-feeling engines Yamaha has ever built. It pulls hard from 3,000 rpm, revs eagerly, and delivers a riding experience that punches well above its displacement. The MT-07 weighs 403 lbs wet and handles like it weighs 350. Compared to its competition at this price point, there’s nothing close.
2015–2018 models regularly appear in the $6,000–$8,500 range. They lack the quickshifter of the 2021+ bikes but are mechanically identical. Buy one, put on a decent exhaust, and you have a $15,000 riding experience for under $9,000.
Who it’s for: Riders with some experience who want a performance street bike without the insurance hit of a supersport.
Watch out for: Stator failures on early models (2015–2016). Check that the charging system is healthy. A dealer service history showing regular maintenance is a green flag.
4. Kawasaki Versys 650 — The Adventure Bargain
Market price range: $5,500–$8,500
Best years to buy: 2015–2020
The Versys 650 is an underrated gem. Kawasaki’s 649cc parallel twin is smooth and tractable, the upright seating position is comfortable for long days, and the optional panniers make it a legitimate touring option. Used ones are cheap because they don’t have the brand recognition of a BMW or KTM adventure bike — which is entirely your gain.
A 2017–2019 Versys 650 with luggage can often be found under $7,000. Add a tank bag and you have a weekend touring setup for less than $8,000 total. For a budget ADV rider, there’s no smarter buy.
5. Harley-Davidson Sportster Iron 883 — The Harley Under Ten Grand
Market price range: $6,000–$9,500 (2014–2020)
Best years to buy: 2016–2020
If you want a Harley-Davidson under $10,000 — and you want a real Harley, not a compromise — the Sportster Iron 883 is the answer. The blacked-out, minimalist Iron styling holds up beautifully. The 883cc Evolution-derived V-twin makes better sound than its spec sheet suggests, and the low seat height (25.7″) makes it genuinely accessible.
2016–2020 Iron 883s sit firmly in the $6,500–$9,000 range depending on mileage and condition. Lower mileage, stock configuration bikes are easier to sell later — heavily modified examples are harder to price and harder to unload.
Who it’s for: Riders who want Harley culture and ownership experience without a $15,000 commitment. Also the best first Harley you can buy.
6. Kawasaki Z650 / Z900 — The Value Naked
Market price range: Z650: $5,500–$7,500 | Z900: $7,000–$9,500
Best years to buy: 2017–2020
Kawasaki’s naked Z lineup is consistently underpriced relative to its quality. The Z900 in particular is a serious motorcycle — 948cc inline-four, 125 hp, aggressive ergonomics — that somehow sits under $9,500 for 2017–2018 examples. If you want a sportier riding experience than the MT-07 at a similar price point, the Z900 is the alternative to seriously consider.
What to Skip Under $10K
A few popular bikes that look like bargains but aren’t:
- Older sport bikes (CBR600RR, R6, GSX-R600 pre-2015): These bikes get ridden hard. Track use, stunt use, and aggressive street riding take a real toll. Verify carefully or avoid if you can’t get full history.
- High-mileage adventure bikes (BMW GS, KTM 1090 under $9K): If it’s priced this far under market, there’s a reason. These are expensive to repair and parts aren’t cheap.
- Anything with a salvage title: Never, regardless of how clean it looks. Especially on motorcycles where structural integrity is life-safety critical.
